The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth - Geek Lifestyle Bootcamp
October 23, 2008Trufax.
But being a geek doesn’t mean just sitting down and playing by yourself. “By,” not “with.” It’s about sharing what you know (OPEN SOURCE) and of course, applying what you know. To work smarter and faster! And these days, “geekiness” = “techieness” and that’s always a plus.
So last week, I attended this madly interesting and brilliantly presented seminar on how to live a Geek Lifestyle. The seminar covered interesting topics such as:
• Taking advantage of Flickr and changing the way you manage and store your pictures. • Polishing your Google skills, allowing to find (or stalk) the information that you need.
• Impress people with your Adobe Photoshop skills with with 2-minute tutorials. (Ok this one didn’t push through because we were shown an immensely fun website to do funky photo alterations with.)
• Pimp out your Web browser with Firefox plugins. (Take that IE!)
• Develop a comfort level with Microsoft Excel and appreciate shortcuts. (Practical uses for MS Office programs)
• Share your library online and track which ones were borrowed.
If you’re interested (obviously) there’ll be another class in November. I’m not sure about the logistics but do drop by the speaker, JC Medina’s, blog for questions and details.
The seminar was held in Kolektib at Cubao X.
Poker Nights
October 7, 2008Have you heard of Poker? If you haven’t, you don’t live in this generation.
Poker has had a big media jump just recently with the coverage of large tournaments, featuring the world’s best and also celebrities for charities.
And now (well, if you haven’t heard) it’s big here in the Philippines too. No I’m not talking about regular playgroups with friends. I’m pretty sure most barkadas have one member who has that shiny metal case with ceramic chips sold at Fully Booked. I’m talking about professional Poker, playing in the big leagues like… The Filipino Poker Tour.
About a week ago, I got an invite to play Poker in the Media Freeroll tournament at the Metro Card Club. Needless to say, I had fun. Everyone was friendly, the staff was accommodating, the food was great, and the players were all quite interesting.
That’s Wits, Bim, and Cai! And Ithink Jayvee at the left side covered by the pretty dealer
Ended up being the first to leave, at least with someone. No wait, I didn’t mean it that way. After around 7 hands or so me and the other guy who left were just bleeding chips away to some lucky dude across the table. We ended up going all in and lost to a trio of Tens. Failure.
Regardless it was great experience, I’m pretty sure that the next time I go play in a professional table, I’ll be able to shake off some of the jitters.
Oh by the way, if you want to give this a whirl, check out www.pokerstars.com and download their client. You can play for free and later if yo’re feeling ambitious, put in some money and play for real cash.
My cousin from Canada does so and makes about $20 every other week. I need to get a credit card, and a job! It ain’t gambling after all, just another hobby.
Why Mike Villar Should Win on PBA 2008
September 18, 2008After a hard day at work or at uni, everyone needs a break. We all have a lot of responsibilities after all, and you gotta admit, things don’t always turn out the way we want them to turn out. So to get away from all the stress one has, everyone needs to laugh… Often, at someone else’s expense.
The good thing is that Mike Villar spares no one his misfortunes. He “dares to fail” and delivers quite humorously his exploits that can leave even the hardiest loser in stitches.Go on, click the link and read his stuff. And if you haven’t had at the least an abnormally loud chuckle, then something is seriously wrong with your sense of humor… Or you have an insane amount of empathy… Which needs to stop before you can appreciate the retarded entries Mike Villar writes!
He has my vote, and hopefully that of several other people as well!
September 5, Night, I Was Abducted By Aliens
September 7, 2008Or something like that…
I wake up Saturday morning, dazed and confused. My left hand aching and bandaged. My right hand connected to a dextrose tube. My dad hands me my phone, and I answer, still dazed.
“Ozy, nasan na report natin?”
“Ano?” I answer groggily.
“Pol Sci, nasa class na kami, nasan ka na?”
“Ngayon na ba yun, shit! Nasa ospital ako.” I answer.
Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep
